The focus of this year’s KBS LTER annual All Scientist Meeting is science communication, a topic of increasing importance in this socio-political climate. In the morning we will have research updates from our lead scientists and a keynote address from Arthur Lupia, entitled, “Communicating Science in Politicized Environments: Lessons from the Study of Attention, Elaboration, and Source Credibility”. We’ve also recruited communication advisors who will help us brainstorm creative, effective ways to communicate our science to the following groups: interested citizens (Dave Poulson, Associate Director, MSU Knight Center for Environmental Journalism), the agricultural community (Beth Stuever, Team Leader, MSU Agriculture & Natural Resources Communication and Nicole Heslip, Agri-News Reporter, Michigan Farm Radio Network), environmental groups (Hugh McDiarmid Jr., Communications Director, Michigan Environmental Council), and policymakers (Michael Kovacic, Director of Stakeholder Relations, MSU College of Agriculture & Natural Resources and Jeffrey Cobb, Chief of Staff for Michigan Senate Majority Floor Leader Arlan Meekhof). The communication advisors will guide discussions during the afternoon working group sessions. Participants will gain from their wisdom and experiences and have opportunities to receive input on their research ‘elevator speech’. To view the near finalized agenda please click here>>
The meeting will be held at the Kellogg Conference Center on campus in East Lansing. The meeting will kick-off with a poster reception on Thursday, April 4th, 6:30-9:30 p.m. and continue on Friday, April 5th, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Continental breakfast will be available starting at 7:30 a.m.
Please submit a poster to share your LTER research – even if your research is only in the just-started or planning stages, this is a great way to get feedback and to let others know of your interests. Tentative titles can be submitted as part of your online registration, below. Posters should be standard size, to 4’ wide. Prior to the meeting, abstracts and electronic copies of posters should be e-mailed (in PDF format) to Justin Kunkle, KBS LTER Science Coordinator, firstname.lastname@example.org.
