KBS094:Primary Production of the Poplar Treatment of the Main Cropping System Experiment

This dataset contains allometric and areal biomass data for the Poplar treatment (T5) of the Main Cropping System Experiment (MCSE) at the LTER Main Site. The Poplar treatment is managed as a short-rotation woody biomass system on an approximate 10-year rotation cycle with replanting or coppicing after harvest. Rotations are as follows:

  • First: planted in April 1989 with stem cuttings of Populus nigra x P. deltoids hybrid at a stocking density of 1 tree per 2 square meter, harvested in February 1999.
  • Second: trees allowed to coppice after 1999 harvest, coppicing produced multiple stems per tree, coppiced regrowth harvested in January 2008.
  • Third: planted in May 2009, after a fallow year, with stem cuttings of Populus nigra x P. maximowiczii at a density of 1 tree per 3.6 square meter, harvested in February 2018.
  • Fourth: planted in June 2019, after a fallow year, with stem cuttings of Populus nigra x P. maximowiczii at a density of 1 tree per 3.6 square meter.

Tables

KBS019-007 Poplar Biomass – Allometric Development

Biomass of semi-annually destructively sampled poplar trees (T5; planted in 1989 and harvested in 1999) and used in the development of allometric equations to determine tree biomass from stem diameter. Harvested trees were separated into wood and leaf fractions. From 1989-1992, woody biomass was further divided into stems and branches, but are combined here in the WOOD fraction; original data are available on request.

KBS019-008 Poplar Yield

Yield (areal biomass) of poplars (T5) as determined by clearcutting and weighing of harvested biomass. Biomass is recorded as the woody production since planting or coppicing and is based on complete harvest of the main plot area (i.e., entire plot minus microplot area).

KBS019-009 Poplar Tree Biomass (Direct Measurement and Allometry)

Biomass of individual poplar (T5) trees, reported on a per tree and an areal basis, as determined by direct biomass measurements (M) from destructive sampling and biomass estimates (E) via allometry using measurements of stem diameter (at 15 cm above ground) and the following equations: biomass_g = 10^ (-1.195 + 2.505 * log(diameter)) (before 2008 for the Populus nigra x P. deltoids hybrid) and biomass_g = 10^(-0.713 + 2.367 * log(diameter)) (after 2008 Populus. nigra x Populs maximowiczii). Note tree biomass by destructive sampling from 1999-2003 represents the sum of coppiced stem biomass; see Related Tables.

KBS019-011 Coppiced Poplar Stem Biomass

Length, diameter, and biomass of individual stems (main vertical axes) from regrowth of coppiced poplars (T5, growth after first harvest in 1999 of trees planted in 1989); coppiced trees often produced multiple stems per tree. Trees were destructively harvested; the stems were separated, their length and diameter measured, and their axillary branches removed before weighing individually. Branches were compiled by tree and weighed; see Related Tables for branch biomass of coppiced poplars.

KBS019-012 Coppiced Poplar Branch Biomass

Biomass of branches (axillary to stems) removed from stems of the coppiced regrowth of poplars (T5; growth after first harvest in 1999 of trees planted in 1989) reported as the total mass of branches per destructively sampled tree. For stem (main vertical access) biomass of coppiced poplars, see Related Tables.

KBS019-013 Coppice Poplar Branch and Stem Biomass

Total biomass of coppiced regrowth of poplars (T5, growth after first harvest in 1999 of trees planted in 1989) determined as the sum of stem (main vertical axes) and branch (axillary to stem) biomass per destructively sampled tree. This table is the summation of stem and branch coppiced regrowth of destructively sampled trees; see Related Tables for individual datatables.

KBS019-025 Poplar Stem Biomass (Direct Measurement and Allometry)

Poplar (T5) biomass based on direct measurements (M) from destructive tree sampling and biomass estimates (E) via allometry using measurements of stem (trunk) diameter (at 15 cm above ground) and the following equations: biomass_g = 10^ (-1.195 + 2.505 * log(diameter)) (before 2008 for the Populus nigra x P. deltoids hybrid) and biomass_g = 10^(-0.713 _ 2.367 * log(diameter)) (after 2008 for the Populus. nigra x Populs maximowiczii variety). Direct biomass measurements are reported on an individual stem (main vertical axes) basis for each tree destructively sampled. Note that coppiced regrowth has multiple stems per destructively sampled tree.

KBS019-029 Poplar (T5) Leaf Litter Biomass

Biomass of leaf litter in the MCSE Poplar treatment (T5). Litter is collected every one-two weeks from litter traps placed on the ground from late summer through leaf fall. When trees are newly planted and small, a larger sampling quadrat may be used, placed on the ground, and the litter within directly sampled.
