Root biomass was sampled in 2014 on the LTER poplar trees to investigate their root distribution with depth. Three cores were taken. Core 1 was within 20 cm of the tree, Core 2 was taken half way between the trees and core 3 was taken halfway between core 1 and core 3. Each core was split into four depths and the roots were separated from the soil.
