Presented at the GLBRC Sustainability Retreat (2010-02-10 to 2010-02-12 )
For the past two years, the GLBRC has supported a summer REU program at the Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) in support of the research being conducted in conjunction with Thrust Group 4 – Development of a Sustainable Bio-Economy. Students develop independent research projects in collaboration with their mentors. They also interact with faculty and postdocs from all aspects of the GLBRC at MSU through participation in weekly discussion sessions, field trips, and project activities. The culmination of the ten weeks is a poster presentation where the students present their research to the KBS community and public. To date the program has supported 12 students, most from small liberal arts colleges. Our goal is to provide these undergraduates with both a meaningful research/educational experience and a better understanding of the broad spectrum of issues and challenges – scientific, environmental, and social – related to development of sustainable biofuels.
