Productivity data for plants other than target crops. The harvest campaign is an annual biomass harvest, but in T6 there are multiple harvests because the alfalfa is harvested multiple times during the year.
In 1998, plants were only sorted to functional group rather than species.
“Standing Dead” (standing dead plants of indeterminate species) was first sampled in 1997. The standing dead designation is for plants that grew this year but had senesced and were unidentifiable at harvest. From 1999 to 2011 this category may also include plant scraps that were unidentified after the plants were sorted to species in the field lab.
The category “Surface Litter” was first sampled in 1998, and may or may not be desired in summaries.
In 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1996 multiple harvests were done to capture species that were not present during the normal harvest period. These data are in the Temporal Harvest table, but the August harvest from those campaigns is included in this table.
This datatable is part of the Annual Net Primary Production on the Main Cropping System Experiment dataset. Aboveground annual net primary production (ANPP) has been measured on the LTER main site since 1990 and on the successional and forested sites since 1993. ANPP is measured at peak biomass for a given treatment. In some systems with multiple harvests or complex communities that have peaks occurring at different times of the year, measurements are taken at multiple times per year. Additional ANPP measurements are made where appropriate using leaf litter traps, estimates of diameter from tree basal diameter and for the poplar treatment occasional destructive harvests. See the ANPP protocol for descriptions of the sampling and measurement methods for each of the treatments.
